Why is AI Ethics Education Necessary?
- There are growing instances of AI technology misuse, such as fatal car accidents involving self-driving cars, a plethora of fake news postings on social media, chatbots that spew hate speech and discriminatory remarks, and deepfake-based frauds. Confronted with this situation, the international community is showing greater interest in “AI ethics.” What, then, does it mean to learn about AI ethics?
- Based on its technological characteristics, an AI can learn on its own without human intervention, often producing unintended/unpredictable outcomes. As such, depending on how it is used, AI technology may benefit or harm humans.
- With ever-growing use of AI, controversies surrounding its social impacts are becoming increasingly common. Learning about AI ethics can help us maintain our humanity by maximizing the benefits and minimizing the negative impacts of AI technology, a force that can directly affect our lives, social and economic interests, and opportunities.
Since AI bias transcends algorithms, models, and datasets, it is critical to cultivate in students the capacity to use AI technology in an ethical manner, an essential capability in the AI Era.
